Tombs in Egypt
When you visit someone, anyone, at their homes, they will always offer you something. A (medieval) king might shower you with gold or expensive presents, especially if you give them a small gift, and a simpler person may offer you tea to drink and warm hospitality.
So think of what it would be like to visit the most generous people of all, the Ahlul Bayt and the awliya of Allah. They are alive in their graves, which are as gardens of Paradise, and are notified by Allah Most High of all those who visit them. And if you visit them, they will most certainly offer you a gift, such as a prayer to Allah that will be answered, or a future Hajj, or whatever else Allah wishes, and they will each offer you a different gift. You won’t necessarily know what that gift is (unless you see it in a vision), but know that they are the most generous of the generous. And if you offer them a simple gift from you, such as the Fatiha or the thawab of a Quranic sura, then they are surely to return the favor with something far greater. And even if you just say salaam to them, their reply to you, of “May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon you”, spoken from someone whose prayers are surely to be answered by Allah, is worth more than a mountain of gold.
So here is a list of my posts that talk about people you can visit in Egypt, it is not a complete list of everyone you can visit (that list is endless), but I’m sure you’ll find in here a lot of names that you might like to visit the next time you go to Egypt.
* “On Visiting Imam al-Husayn” is the first thing to read, because it concerns the most important tomb in all of Egypt. It gives you a proper understanding of the story behind his tomb’s existence in Cairo and most importantly: what lies inside it. If your beliefs about it are sound, then your visit will be of more benefit, and you will have better manners there, and the blessings will be multiplied, insha’Allah.
* In Farewell Visits 1 I talked about:
- Sayyidna Al-Husayn and some of the possessions of the Prophet (pbuh).
- Fatima al-Nabawiyya, daughter of al-Husayn.
- Sayyida Sukayna, daughter of al-Husayn.
- The mashhad of Ali Zain al-Abidin, son of al-Husayn. (mashhad= not a tomb but a shrine where his soul was seen)
- Sayyida Zaynab, daughter of sayyida Fatima al-Zahraa and sister of al-Hasan and al-Husayn.
- Sayyida Aisha, daughter of Jaafar al-Sadiq.
- Muhammad Ali, son of Jaafar al-Sadiq.
- Ruqayya, daughter of Ali al-Rida, son of Musa al-Kazim, son of Jaafar al-Sadiq.
- Sayyida Nafeesa (descendant of al-Hasan and the most famous tomb in Cairo after al-Husayn).
- Ahmad al-Dardir, a great wali and Maliki scholar, known as “Little Malik”.
* In Goodbye Cairo I revisited many of the ones mentioned above but added:
- The companion of the Prophet (pbuh), Uqba bin Aamir al-Juhayni (r.a.)
- Al-Imam al-Shafii
- Zakariyya al-Ansari
- The Maliki Masters (Al-Saada al-Maalikiyya)
- Izz al-Din bin Abd al-Salam.
- Ibn Daqiq al-Eid
- Ibn Ata’illah al-Sakandari
- Ibn al-Farid
- Ibn Abi Jamra
- Al-Saada al-Wafa’iyya
In Final Visits I added:
- Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya
- Dhul-Nun al-Misri
- Rabi’a al-Adawiyya
- Jalaluddin al-Suyuti
- Al-Rifa’i
And of course in all the Cairo visits I visited my shaykh Saleh al-Jaafari.
* In A Prophet’s Kiss I talked about some people you can visit in Alexandria:
- The Prophet Daniel
Many great Shadhili Masters including:
- Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi
- Al-Busiri
- Yaqut al-Arsh
- Makeen al-Deen al-Asmar
(There is also a room in between Abu al-Abbas and Yaqut al-Arsh which houses some 20 tombs, most of whom are descendants of Ali Zaynul Abidin (son of al-Husayn) but I didn’t mention them in that post, as well as a wali buried in a mosque right opposite the Prophet Daniel (pbuh).
* In The Crowned Son, I talk about a tomb in Zagazig, not too far away from Cairo, that houses one of the Prophet’s descendants, known as Yahya al-Mutawwaj (Yahya Who is Crowned with Muhammadan Lights). The entire place is a miraculous, so read the post to find out more. However I wasn’t able to post any pictures as I had promised so you’ll just have to visit the place yourself.
