Also FYI, a chapter in the book Knowledge and Wisdom by Imam Abdallah ibn Alawi has a chapter on the 'Rights of the Ahl e Bayt'. It touches on this subject too.

well bro, I can tell you the gist of it and then maybe a visitor here might know the story. But the sultan came across an individual who claimed to be banu hashim and so the sultan stood up for him and showed much respect. Later he was questioned by someone in his court as to whether that individual was even whom he claimed to be - to which the Sultan replied something to the effect that he showed that respect due to Prophet (peace be upon him) and did not need to question it. Similarly, I know of an incident in my family where a Siddiqi lady was given respect/present etc by my grandfather to which the individual objected claiming she was not worthy etc - and she got the response that it isn't because of her or for her but because of and for her 'nasab' :)

Jazakallah! ... I heard a story of an Ottommon caliph practicing Husn al-Dhann once when he had to deal with a similar claim. Thanks!
